Health Education England Genomics Education Programme
The Genomics Education Programme regularly posts up new resources, so it is worth bookmarking this site. In March 2019, the GEP partnered with Progress Educational Trust to hold a panel event focused on the experiences of patients who have been through genomic testing, and the ways in which health professionals can best support them and their families. A film of the discussion, Talking Genomics with Patients, is available to download and watch.
Wellcome Genome Campus
The Public Engagement team from the Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridge have a very full and detailed website called www.yourgenome.org. It covers anything and everything to do with Genomics - animations, videos, teaching exercises.
They have also put together a free online course, specifically targeted at nurses around the world: ‘What is Genetic Counselling?’ (https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/what-is-genetic-counselling). The course started on June 17th and runs until 25th August 2019. Once this period is over there will be no live monitoring of the forums, but you can still join and complete the course during the remaining period. It takes less than 2 hours per week for 6 weeks to complete and includes case studies, video, papers and chat to help learning.
The course will be run several times, to be determined by FutureLearn as to when exactly. If you are interested, we advise that you log into the course and add your email so that FutureLearn can get in touch when they are ready to run it again.
Led by Professor Anna Middleton, the course has also had input from genetic counsellors in South Africa, Australia, Canada, Russia and India, so it is truly international.
Designed for healthcare professionals, clinicians, biomedical research scientists, and anyone curious about genetic counselling, this course provides an introduction to the role of the genetic counsellor for those who are new to the topic, but also offers enough depth to contribute towards valuable support for Continuing Professional Development in the field. CPD accreditation is available from the Royal College of Nursing on completion of this course.
